about

Recorded live at the Montreal Jazz festival, Spirit was released first on Toshiba-EMI in Japan and then on Blue Note in the U.S. (Artist owns the rights.) Featuring Michele Rosewoman on piano and vocals vocals, Kenny Davis on bass and Gene Jackson on drums.

"Rosewoman revels in the joy she finds at the heart of whatever she plays; her greatest talent is her ability to communicate that to the listener. Without doubt, Michele Rosewoman is an important voice for the future of jazz. But make no mistake; she's doing it in the here and now." JAZZ IZ

"...one of the most impressive and innovative of 90's jazz artists. She is both an engaging composer and a challenging pianist." BILLBOARD

Spirit reflects a remarkably mature musical sense...(Rosewoman's) playing is passionate, her compositions complex and her ideas fascinating. She converts "When Sonny Gets Blue' into a jazz classic, and 'For Agayu' radiates with a Latin glow".
SANFRANCISCO EXAMINER

"Pianist, vocalist and highly accomplished artist Michele Rosewoman is a versatile talent who uses her multi-virtuostic skills ...to blend and synthesize diverse forms... Michele skillfully spins and weaves these forms of music into wonderfully cohesive and creative gems of sound. Spirit, Michele Rosewoman's sixth release, quite marvelously displays this artist's creative spirit--and her extensive and impressive repertoire reveals her breadth and depth as a talent of the finest caliber. JAZZ, ROOTS, RHYTHM

"Rosewoman displayed strong technical powers and intensity in the post-Hancock tradition. On Spirit, Rosewoman is at her peak...solo passages burst from her fingers as if they were contents under pressure. Rosewoman certainly hasn't gone soft on her major label debut." GAVIN

"Pianist and composer Rosewoman treads no stylistic path but her own. THE NEW YORKER

"Soulful and intense, Michele Rosewoman deserves a wider audience. She creates a compelling mix of post-bop. Afro-Cuban and popular music...an unusual ability to bridge two worlds. OTTAWA CITIZEN
