about

Released in 2006, The In Side Out, Michele Rosewoman’s 5th release with her ensemble Quintessence, celebrates the virtuosity and versatility of one of the most talented pianist / composer / bandleaders on today’s international jazz scene . Michele’s all-star quintet – augmented with appearances by several notable guest artists -- explores the diverse musical styles that inspire and inform her artistry and together they present a multi-faceted musical mosaic embracing acoustic modern jazz (Tracks #1, 3, 4, 7, 10), sophisticated phunk (Tracks #5, 9, 11), dynamic electric fusion (Tracks #2, 8) and ecstatic Afro Cuban jazz (Track #6).

In addition to Quintessence Rosewoman, who is well-trained in Cuban percussion and African music, has led the ensemble New Yor-Uba since the mid-'80s and has 2 releases by this ensemble. Her discography includes recordings on Soul Note, Enja, Evidence and Blue Note as well as 3 on her own label, Advance Dance.

Rosewoman is one of the under-the-radar stars of American music. She’s a mistress of integrating forms. * * * * DOWNBEAT

Once again, Rosewoman shows that she’s an original thinker making uncompromising and forward-looking jazz — which just happens to be accessible and viscerally exciting. One of her strongest outings. JAZZIZ

Rosewoman’s piano work balances a Bill Evans-like neoclassicism with a propulsive attack and an adventurous harmonic imagination.… Dance with the spirits of the ancestors, as this ensemble does so deftly. JAZZTIMES

(Advance Dance Discques)
Pianist Michele Rosewoman’s fusion of Afro-Cuban folkloric music and post-bop jazz avoids the obvious and easy without being obscure. For this album with her five-piece Quintessence group, she adds a dash of R&B and funk to the mix for one of her strongest outings.

Her compositions layer whip-smart riffs and catchy melodies that create riveting push-pull rhythm tensions. The melodies in “Warm” sizzle and dance like water on a hot griddle and launch the band into some blistering solos. Guest vocalist Olu Femi Mitchell and percussionist Pedro Pablo Martinez join the core group for a wide-ranging excursion through Afro-Cuban music and jazz on “Eshu Laroye,” one of the album’s highlights.

With her percussive attack and two-handed style, Rosewoman’s solo on “Link” is bristling with rhythmic clashes and harmonic daring, her right hand lines dancing through a thicket of dense chords. She and guest guitarist Dave Fiuczynski lock in some complex interactions on “Guapo.” As good as the leader is, tenor saxophonist Mark Shim, with his dark, burly tone and biting phrases, very nearly steals the show, turning in outstanding solos on “Advance Dance” and “The ER.” Saxophonist Miguel Zenón makes a good foil for Shim and unfurls a graceful soprano solo on “Link” and a burnished alto solo on “Advance Dance.” Once again, Rosewoman shows that she’s an original thinker making uncompromising and forward-looking jazz — which just happens to be accessible and viscerally exciting.
