about

Released in 1987 on Enja Records, this is the first of 5 Quintessence recordings to date. Artist now owns the recording in its entirety, Because artist purchased compact discs from record company and there are a limited number of copies left, they are priced higher than others.

"This was the birth of Quintessence. I'm always surprised to hear, which I often do, of the impact this release had on many young musicians. Am honored that this is the case. Comprised of some of the most creative voices in the field of contemporary and original 'jazz', We were reaching for all new things here. I think we have all continued to do exactly that. Am grateful to Greg Osby, Steve Coleman, Anthony Cox and Terri Lyne Carrington for their ever-so-valuable contributions to this recording. Several of the compositions here were originally written for my 'New Yor-Uba' ensemble but were first recorded here--and since then, recorded by New Yor-Uba. They translate perfectly. Check out their evolution!

"She communicates assurance and ardor whether on the cutting edge of jazz or within the mainstream. What musicianship and moving expression! Bring on the future." DOWNBEAT

"...a splendid set of original compositions for quintet. Ms. Rosewoman's piano combines a fluid sense of line with tensile strength...and powerhouse drive. 'Quintessence' is one of the more encouraging recent signs that a new generation of musicians, influenced equally by free jazz, the be-bop revival, funk and Afro-Latin music, is creating a timely syntheses all its own." THE NEW YORK TIMES

"Rosewoman's writing is jubilant and architectonic. Fats Waller meets Anthony Braxton...a Monkish motif will give way to a pastoral swing episode a la Hank Jones. Rosewoman's melodies are as joyfully convoluted as Parker's." THE VILLAGE VOICE
